Chapter Fourteen

He looked down at his lap, then slowly shook his head. “You’re not lying to me are you? And you think this is similar to what’s happening now?”

I nodded, then shook my head. “No. Not really. Only for the fact that after experiencing that, I know…” I broke off and considered what I was about to admit. “I know evil exists. I’ve seen it, felt it. For years I’ve thought that if I denied the existence of evil I could somehow come to terms with what happened. I could pretend it wasn’t real. And that’s exactly what I did. And after a while I believed it; would have kept believing it if not for what happened in UB. Vincent, whatever was in that mist was evil. There’s no other explanation for it.”

“But the way you describe Peter isn’t like the way you describe Davis and the prisoners.”

“I see what you’re saying. Davis and the others became mad with the need to kill. It was like they went into a bloodthirsty rage. The thing in Peter thought, considered. It was violent, but only when it chose to be. It could control itself. The things in UB couldn’t. But still, I think somehow it’s the same. I can’t explain it now, but I’m sure I’m right.”

He looked at the clock. “I’ve gotta go now.”

I leaned forward so he could have his arm back. The moment he drew away I felt his absence. My shoulders were cold again. I hated to admit that I didn’t want him to go. I felt safe with him there.

“Thanks for sharing that story with me. I know it wasn’t easy.”

“Not even a little bit.”

“Will you be all right?”

I forced myself to smile. “Of course I will be. It was years ago. And we’re so far away from Triune right now, how could I be worried about what happened there? Or in the Underground.”

“I’ll come back after the meeting.”

I was going to tell him that he didn’t have to, but stalled. “A meeting? About what’s going on?” I sat up and started to kick free of the comforter.

“Right now you don’t need to think about the meeting. Just rest.” He rose and walked to the door. “We’ll talk about the meeting in the morning.”

“Vincent, I was down in UB. I saw what was there.”

“I postponed the meeting two hours so I could be sure you were okay.”

I switched a lamp on. “Give me a minute and I’ll get dressed.”

Vincent frowned, his eyebrows furrowing until they nearly formed one bushy, black mass on his face. “You can’t go.”

“What do you mean I can’t go? My partner is dead and I was in the Underground with you, fighting off those monsters right beside you.”

“That doesn’t matter—”

“Doesn’t matter? What do you mean it doesn’t matter?”

Rolling his eyes, he tried once more to stick his hands in his pockets. “You know what I mean. Of course it matters, but you’re in no condition to be up and moving around. You need to rest.
